If you were looking to build a hypothesis I might suggest maybe looking at extreme cases of DV, i'm sure there is numbers available for that (i'm canadian and I know stats-canada tracks that sort of thing.) But i'm not sure in the states. I think you'd have a difficult time tying that to anything beyond marriage though, something like comparing against alimony would likely require some sort of independant study. That said you can still look at the numbers and compare just how viable a hypothesis…

Brinig & Allen actually states that when they both have the potential earnings that are similar and neither side has the financial benefit of divorce (Read: Alimony) divorce rates are pretty close.. But when one side can financially benefit from it, the rates skyrocket. Not really surprising in the end, But a fun read if the mood should strike you.
