This is a reply from last year, after I inquired as to why this sexist policy still exists. This was also after the policy was made widely known through a CBC news story. http://imgur.com/a/vsp48 Pretty shitty explanation

I missed the part about who had custody. My point was that in determining the amount of support, any money coming in other than her income doesn't have a bearing on how much the father would be paying (child support) regardless of custody arrangement.

If she marries a new husband that pays the mortgage, it has absolutely no bearing on her child support amount. It is based solely on her income.

Yes, only with shared custody, and a minimum of 40%, as I mentioned. There is absolutely no reason to not get shared custody. The courts these days are trying to give equal time to both parents, as its only fair. It would be helpful if you have other family members around that can help provide support for the child too. Showing the court (if you have to go to court) that you are most definitely willing and capable caring for your child, will give you a really good head start on the whole thing. …

Yeah, just do a calculation on the tables for Ontario. Base it on what both of you would pay one another in a sole custody arrangement. It's all online now and easy to calculate. Example: You make $50,000, you would pay her $500/mth She makes $60,000, she would pay you $600/mth Take the difference, and that is what she will be paying, ie - $100/mth to you.

I haven't read all the comments, but if she makes more money than you, and you fight for shared custody (having at least >40% of the time), she will be paying you child support.

This is the explanation I was given - If the mother is considered to be responsible enough to raise the children, she is assumed to be resposible enough with the money. Stupidest fucking reasoning I've heard in a loooong time.

Before I would consider this, how much do you value your privacy? I thought about the same situation when my ex and I split up. I have enough property that I could have split off half for her. Except, after a little while, I think the households would end up meshing and you may end up doing shit to each other. It would be ideal if it worked, for your son's sake, but each of you will be bringing partners home at some point.

I have been in a similar situation, albeit with two children (both boys). The very hardest part for me above all the legal bullshit, lack of finances and fighting through the divorce, was that I didn't see my kids every day anymore. It was only a couple of days in between seeing them, but it was very hard to adjust to. They were also a little older than your son is, so I could explain a lot of things to them. The biggest advice I can give you is not to succumb to anything other than the best for…

LOL, definitely not into bars anymore. I'm 40 and have quite a few opportunities, still a little gun-shy though. I do also like OkCupid, definitely a good way to weed through people quicker.

Yep. It's not the women who are evil, just bad personalities. Sounds like you and me have a similar outlook and experience. Good for you for sharing, it helps in dealing with the frustration.

Again, good advice. I married at a young age as well. I will try as hard as I can to drill it into my children that you should be at least 30 before even considering marriage, especially involving rearing children. You don't even know who you are up until that point. I can't say that I'm as lucky as you in finding someone with those three qualities I desire as well. However, I'm still enjoying my single parent life and I am very patient :-) The one thing I told my ex when we were splitting is th…

Fuck that... And you're right about the drinking and other stuff, it doesn't matter. I was told by my lawyer that unless the other parent is physically or sexually abusing the child(ren) it won't even be considered.

This is the biggest point you could have made in your posts. It's extremely important who you have kids with, although some people change when kids enter the picture. I went through something similar, albeit not NEARLY as harsh last year. I have joint custody of my kids, and the only reason for that is we kept it out of the courts. If I had the tens of thousands of dollars it would have taken to get sole custody of my kids, I would have pursued it. She had/has an alcohol and gambling addiction a…
