Only the "rich" males get this - the poor ones don't get any wives at all. A poor young populace with little to no prospects for the future makes a great army/cannon fodder/underclass to piss on. She'd been taken advantage of her entire life by bad men, so instead of telling me I was also bad for being male, she tried to "educate" me in all the ways men fail women. Her intent was honestly good, but boy did that screw me over in my teens when it came to interactions with women. Unfortunately, since having a son, I've come to realize that my life would've been a lot harder had it been a girl instead. There's so many things I do with my son that would probably draw suspicion if the genders were reversed.
