Asking what his deal is is a little confrontational. I would just buy him a drink at the right time (distracted or away from his crew) and introduce the fact that it's awkward but that you don't care. He's your Eskimo brother now, right? Ha-ha. Even tall guys can have a small man complex, so if it's a pride thing, that's tough. Around his boys, he probably has a false sense of confidence, or worse, a real sense of confidence. Avoiding fighting is your MO. Good luck man.

I don't know how well you know this guy or what your history is, but if it were me I would buy him a drink in front of his boys, introduce a girl later or something. Keep your friends close, your enemies closer.

I helped a friend research this to death about a year ago, and over time we had some unconventional realizations.
