In use, you'd say 'female students', not just female by itself, that would be the non-offensive way to use female to describe women. Referring to a group as just males or females is a bit demeaning. Usually the noun is inferred, so in like a documentary, after they introduce the animal, they will often shorten it to 'the male' or 'the female' instead of saying 'the female lion'. So many of these people act like it's cutting off your toes or something, it's crazy.
