In my country India, many men try to get married into wealthier families through arranged marriages so they can get a hefty 'dowry' from the girl's family which includes a lot of cash and gifts. The problem is so rampant that married women have been killed/tortured when their families were unable to give dowry or bend to the money demands of the groom's family.
