How is the selection process not based purely on merit? Both the lads and the gals take the exam with the exact same conditions. I can guarantee, that the results will not suddenly all go up, and if they do, the examiners will notice the trend and harshen the marking.

I mean the whole point of a takehome exam is give more opportunities for everyone to prove themselves. Why should Historians only prove themselves using timed exams under stressful conditions? Why should thinking and writing quickly be a condition for a great historian? I'm confused by your logic. Nobody is trying to get an equal outcome. They're trying to make sure they're examining everyone's ability correctly

I mean the article states that the paper is gonna be swapped. So I'm assuming that they will create an exam for those specific conditions. I really really doubt that they are going to be assuming that people won't look at notes/materials. It would be similar to an essay or an assignment. People need to understand, that this isn't a freebie for anyone. As I said below, the average tends to around 60% for most examinations. Quality of the education hasn't decreased and neither will the standard of examination. Changing the methodology doesn't mean changing the standard. The questions won't be the same as in a timed examination, or if they are, they will have stricter marking.

Definitely, I think there's a bigger drive now though, but I think many people here are thinking about it in the wrong way. No faculty wants to give away a freebie. But there can be serious descripancies between exam results and someone's ability. I'm not even talking about girls vs boys here, there are definitely issue to heavily relying on time pressured exams (solely) to judge a student's ability. Those exams won't be set for women only, if anything, it's progressive since it's tending away from timed examinations for history. Both genders have the same exam requirements.

if they are concerned - yes. All examinations are reported on afterwards, with a gender performance section. Depending on the standard deviation (averages are always around 60-65%, that's what examiners aim for here), it may be statistically significant.

Well, GCSEs and A Levels are pre University and Oxbridge First is a University result. So females are better in high school, whilst at Uni, there's a a gender gap.
