Yeah if it's a short term relationship the approach would be more casual haha. I still think showing that you care about the person and appreciate them, even if you have nothing further to gain from the relationship, can provide some sweet for a bitter ending.

This might apply more to ltrs, but after the dust of the initial conversation has settled, try to appreciate all of the good that the relationship brought as well: Reminisce, trade photos, acknowledge all of the things you will miss most dearly about them and also provide them your time and attention while you both mourn. Respect them all the way to the end, then wave with tears in your eyes as they move off into the distance.

Here's a recent experience of one of my relationships which ended successfully (M30, F26). We sustained a beautiful long term relationship where we shared endless joyful experiences and fought barely ever.
