I believe that it should A: be gender neutral (you already said this) and B: have a fixed amount. this is fixed amount should be roughly equal to what person 1 would have normally earned during that time, plus a bit more. this seems more fair than person 1 getting far more money than what they would have gotten.

I know my teachers would always call the girls and barely ever the boys because of sexism. when there were no girls up and boys hands up they would call a random girl AND THEN they would talk about how all the girls were doing so well. One of my teachers gave me a bad grade because she didn't think I deserved it because "all the girls worked harder" when one of the girls had a 5 slide presentation and I and my partner had 13 slides and memorized our lines. its not like i was a bad kid either.
