Well done for only paying your half of the date I’d of struggled. In that situation. It was the father of the bride who paid the dowery, they did this so if the husband died the wife had some money to fall back on. And the term ‘gentleman’ and him paying fir everything comes from a time before ww2 when woman didn’/wasn’t allowed to work so he brought the money into the house she kept the house going. My history on this is a little rusty so may have over summarised this.
