This is the biggest key to it all, here. You need to have something productive, to you, to take up your schedule where you may normally find yourself in a state of longing. I had my share of burger flipping - not even a "proper" line chef. But my hat is ultimately off to you. When I say well fucking done and spicy as shit, guys like you probably roll your eyes in disgust and serve it up anyway. That's when most of the time I find a way to yell thank yous to chefs. We respect you, never forget that.

Chiming in to say in my company when billable hours are shy, I can cover hours in my shift studying, and they fully cover cert expenses and other research/learning opportunities with our partners. Good companies still exist. Rare, but they're out there.

I recently took a position where I do 4 x 10 hour shifts w/ 1 hour breaktime. Let me tell you guys, this is where it's at. Friday all day off. FANTASTIC. // Edit: "But you can't do anything during the day!" factor in my commute, and when I'm on shift, it's basically work eat sleep repeat for those four days, but I do have 2 hours before and after my work time to get some certification studying done. The ironic part of this ALL: Testosterone stunts your growth. Being excessively tall can often be linked to testosterone deficiencies. So really, the LOGICAL way of thinking would show that no. Shorter men actually are not weaker. But logic need not apply with these kinds of peeps.
