I don't mean conditions for the market, but conditions for what kinds of things a free market can work on. For example, food is an abundant resource that many people can produce, so there's a lot of competition and supermarkets will end up having the optimal price. On the other hand, medications can only be produced by a few companies and many people desperately need them, so the companies can agree to charge ridiculous prices like in the USA — that's when free market is not the optimal choice.

As you said, you learn to recognize the signs of food being rotten. It's not 100% foolproof, but foolproof enough that you'll very rarely find yourself biting into a rotten fruit — and if you do, you'll spit it out immediately instead of keeping on chewing it. Also, you find out that some of the fruit that looks rotten actually isn't rotten, it just has an ugly peel. You can easily recognize it if you go beyond the peel.

There have been many scientific studies around this subject, finding out, for example, that women prefer men with the “dark triad” personality traits. I'm not saying that all women are lying, but that those who say that most women prefer kind men are lying. Nuclear disasters are so rare that the total human deaths per energy produced is lower than any other power source. And other sources have caused many more disasters, but somehow nobody is talking about them. Cheap solar collectors are great, until the sun stops shining. Cheap wind plants are great, until the wind stops blowing. And then you'll have to spin up your coal plants and pollute the air. Obviously great power can be used for good or for bad. How is that relevant?
