No it isn't. Half my wife's family live in various parts of Mexico. I've heard a lot of the differences among regions and have many South American pals to know about some subtle differences in accents and some words.

I know a good amount of Spanish and this South American Spanish is quite difficult. Even for native speakers from other countries. I'm not sure where they are from but Spanish from Spain and Mexico is the cleanest I've heard and taking regionalisms aside, quite standard. My gripe is trying to understand Spanish from Venezuela, Colombia and Argentina. In that order.
