| -2 | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismWow, you've really won me over with that tremendous argument. If you read my original post, you'd see that I support many of the issues discussed on this sub. I'm not an enemy of the Men's Rights movement by any means but I think its approach to feminism is flawed. | /r/MensRights | 29/06/15 02:13 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismThe point is, men do not suffer from a lack of rights. In certain cases they suffer from a lack of sufficient or equal enforcement of the rights they do have. By your logic, people don't have a right to life because some people get murdered. | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 11:09 PM |
| 0 | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismLook, I've respectfully tried to have a sensible discussion with you so far, and you clearly have no interest in doing so in return. Just be aware that you've lost this argument. | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 10:57 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismWith all due respect, I've made what I consider to be valid points, and instead of trying to rebut these points, you've just resorted to ad hominem attacks. If you disagree with my points, please try to explain why you think I'm wrong rather than resorting to petty name-calling. | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 10:43 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismI debate at a national level IRL, so trust me when I say that I'm here for some serious discussion. I'll maintain that the FDR quote was not a valid response. If you want to prove me wrong, posting quotes from 70+ years ago about totally different subjects is not the way to do it. I presented an argument, explaining why moderate feminists do not give greater credibility to extreme feminists. If you want to beat me in this argument, you need to present an argument that disproves that. Until you d… | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 10:38 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismThe point is, the really radical people who consider themselves feminists are often not feminists at all (that is, if they don't fully support equal rights). Most feminists are moderate, do care about equal rights, and agree that men face some serious issues that need to be solved. Those people shouldn't be dismissed as extreme man-haters; they should be supported and cooperated with by the Men's Rights movement, because they have similar objectives. | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 10:26 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismI accept that the modern feminist movement often fails to address issues that are important in favour of less important ones, as you've identified, but my original post was about supporting feminism IN PRINCIPLE, not necessarily in practice. | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 10:21 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismJust as there are a 'non-significant' number of babies who are inadvertently harmed by circumcision, there are lots of adults who die as a result of surgeries that go wrong, or who experience unexpected side effects from medicines that ultimately cause more harm than good. Does that mean that people should stop performing operations just because there's a chance something could go wrong? Obviously not. Let's look at the balance of harms. Benefits of circumcision: -reduced likelihood of catching … | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 10:16 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismYour argument is laughably ridiculous. How am I following the herd by supporting, in principle, a movement which you yourself admit the vast majority of women do not consider themselves to be a part of? Isn't that entirely contradictory? And have you considered that the reason why you have that perspective on feminism is because the 'nasty, whiny, aggressive louts' are the ones who are most vocal in their opinions? Most feminists are reasonable and genuinely support gender equality, but their vo… | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 10:03 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismWell, given that the reception this post is getting I wouldn't say this sub is particularly tolerant of different perspectives either. At least in /r/feminism they accept that many of the issues faced by men are legitimate, whereas in this sub any suggestion that feminism may have some validity, or that women face any problems at all is seemingly instantly mass-downvoted. | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 09:52 PM |
| -1 | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismI agree, which is why I clearly said in the original post that this sub should support feminism IN PRINCIPLE, not necessarily in practice. | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 09:41 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismI couldn't care less about whether or not it's upvoted. I'm interested in having an actual debate here. You claimed that moderate feminists give the extreme fringe credibility and power. I argued against that. What's your response to my argument? You've totally ignored it so far. | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 09:39 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismIf performed by a trained professional in a safe environment, circumcision is entirely safe, and has tangible health benefits, whereas FGM is deliberate damage of the female genitals. Circumcision is not intended to damage the genitals. Out of interest, if you are totally opposed to 'mutilation' of a child's body without their consent, is it wrong for the umbilical cord of a newborn child to be cut (without their consent)? | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 09:37 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminism'Feminists wanted to discriminate against men' No. Anyone who wants to discriminate against men is not a feminist. They are a misandrist. | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 09:33 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismQuoting FDR is not a valid response to the point I raised. I'll respond to your argument anyway; the moderate feminists do not give the extreme fringe credibility and power. In fact, they do the precise opposite, because the extreme fringe who hold radical opinions only seem more extreme and unreasonable when compared to the majority of sensible feminists, in much the same way that moderate, peaceful Muslims make extremist groups like Islamic State seem less credible, as those groups are so far … | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 09:31 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismYet you're happy to support the Men's Rights movement, which the majority of men probably aren't even aware of let alone actively support? | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 09:24 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismI'll address your points in order, with excerpts from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. -The right to genital integrity: "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment" -The right not to be forced into wars: "Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment" -The right to opt-out of parenthood: Ok, this one isn't explicitly covered in the UDHR, s… | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 09:23 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismBoth men and women have the right not to have their genitals mutilated. Now, I'd accept that in some cases that right isn't implemented and enforced properly, but the right definitely exists. However, comparing FGM to circumcision is totally ridiculous anyway. They're totally different. | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 08:58 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismYou're implying that a movement that focuses on gender equality can be used to actively harm one gender, which is objectively untrue. If a movement could be used to actively harm one gender, it could not, by definition, be a movement about gender equality. Your argument is predicated on feminism being something different from what it actually is, so let me ask you, what do you think the definition of feminism is if it's not what I posted? | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 06:47 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismI'm aware of the criticisms of feminism on here, but I believe these can mostly be attributed to extreme fringe members of the feminist movement, who are unrepresentative of the vast majority of moderate feminists who genuinely support gender equality. In fact, people who call themselves feminists but exhibit misandrist behaviour or actively seek to harm men ARE NOT feminists, by definition. To say that a feminist can be misandrist is like saying an egalitarian can be racist. The two words are o… | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 06:43 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismDo you support gender equality? If you do, you're a feminist. A lot of people are misinformed about feminism, partly because people assume that all feminists are radical man-haters (an interpretation that is constantly perpetuated by this sub). Whether other women support it or not is irrelevant. | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 06:40 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismWell, if you look at less developed countries, women most certainly do lack some rights. At any rate, which actual RIGHTS do men lack? | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 06:38 PM |
| – | Why this sub needs to stop bashing feminismTwo questions: Firstly, what in your opinion are the goals and aspirations of the modern feminist movement? Secondly, since you assert that it would be valid for feminism to be called the Female Rights movement if it were about missing rights for females, what RIGHTS do men actually lack? I can accept that sometimes men face problems in society, but I don't think these are based on a lack of rights. | /r/MensRights | 28/06/15 06:36 PM |
