How exactly did the gender issue play a role in this case? Would you care to clarify? Are you saying that the court is not giving weightage to the girl's consent just because she is a girl? Do you think if the court had not been influenced by the gender issue, they would have let go of the guy based solely on the girl's consent, even though she was a minor at the time? Look at it this way, the girls consent is being ignored. It could be construed that she does not have the right to have consensual sex with who she choses. Only because she was a legal minor at the time. It is not a gender issue ("women's right" as outraged2 put above). It is about the age. In every country in the world with a working legal system, a minor - male or female - cannot consent to sex. India is also a country that has had more women leaders in politics than the US ever did. India is a country that is actually considering reserving one-third of the seats in Parliament for women (which I don't support - any kind of reservation for leadership positions anywhere is not a good idea). As per Indian law, marriage of minors is illegal. If anybody complained against such marriages and it was brought to the attention of the court (just like the case in the article was brought to the attention of the law), the parents and other people who conducted the marriage would be found guilty and punished. Just because it happens doesn't mean it is condoned by the law.

This is one of the most WTF comments I have come across on Reddit. I'd never have thought to interpret the events that way. Do you look at everything through the distorted lens of women's rights?
