There's a difference between a self-professed feminist and someone who actually understands what feminism is about. Just because they're prominent doesn't mean that they're actually feminists. They might use the term, but feminism goes far beyond womens rights and stands for, as mitravelus said, equality regardless of gender.

I'm not sure of how true this is, but apparently the name feminism was coined by the anti-feminists as an insult or a mockery of the womens liberation movement, which then adopted the name itself. Regardless, I agree completely with what you said, feminism is easily one of the most misunderstood terms today.
