From a survival/instinct point of view, the "best" things to eat are sugar and fat, (instant energy and calorie density) and yes, we crave those things. Most men worship the ground women walk on, even attractive ones, and women are ridiculously selective. Lots of things can drive and guide men towards self improvement, some are great, some are awful, some are downright stupid. Think about it this way - every attractive woman who is "taken" has taken a competitor off the board for you, and given your perspective, probably a competitor who was going to do better than you. And of course you have to get "lucky" - a lot of stars have to align for a relationship between two people to work out.
