This is a fantastic thread and I am very impressed by the quality of the recommendations. To push things in another direction, I would recommend that you read Plato. You can get the collected works in a single volume edited by J. M. Cooper. I recommend this because no other author than Plato (and his subject, Socrates) will make you realize your ignorance and reliance on bad assumptions more quickly. He will pull away nonsense from you.
