And film club too! We should do Media Mondays or something where we share books, films, TV series, etc. with examples of HV characters. (actually Mondays are taken but you get the idea)

I mean, not necessarily. I sometimes drive 100 kilometers/h in a 120 zone just because it's safer and more fuel efficient. But driving 40km/h in a 60 zone would be weird.

I recently saw a post in my area that asked for this and specified that he'd also like the woman to keep his daughter company (so basically "Please pay half my rent and babysit my child for free")

I'm also private, I hate the idea of anyone else being there. I'm not an expert, but I think some basic principles include - Not stealing the spotlight from another important event/celebration - Not proposing in a way that manipulates the woman to say yes, or when she is dealing with something else important (like the death of a family member) - Not proposing in a mundane setting ("Hey let's get married" while driving home from the shops.) - Planning a proposal that is special, and that will mea…

Yip, what's worse is that he became such a stalker after the divorce that my cousin and both kids ended up having to get a restraining order.

My cousin caught her husband sending innapropriate sexual texts to her sister. She forgave him because he promised it would never happen again. Five years later, they were visiting the family and he was caught crawling into the bathroom on all fours while the sister was in the shower. My cousin moved out for a while, but he blamed it on the stress of having a sick child and she eventually took him back. Seven years later, she caught him watching porn on their daughter's iPad. The topic? "Man ban…

In the US or globally? In my country 1 in 3 women are raped at least once in their lifetime, but I do think we're on the more extreme end of the spectrum when it comes to violent crime in general.

Curious about the 10-year one. Did you live together? How old were you? And how did his behavior change over the years (and after the proposal?)

I've always thought it would be cool to have a chosen one trope where the chosen one is a single mother in her 40s

Yip, thanks for the addition! All her rental income goes to him She still pays her own mortgage He knows she can't afford this but doesn't care because he gets to control her financially She has no stake/equity in his property and no rights since they aren't married She has to move across town for his ex-wife's convenience She probably ends up being a slave to him and his kids

Even worse, "my boyfriend wants me to be a maid and nanny to him and his kids while I pay off his mortgage"

RomComs like this often encourage "cool girl" behavior and perpetuate the lie that most women are emotional, clingy, and only looking to settle down, and that men are only interested in cool girls who don't care about commitment, feelings, etc. It implies that "high-value" men are naturally going to be womanizers who only care about casual sex unless they find a woman cool enough to make them want to commit. Also, the "happy ending" for the cool girl who is career focused is that she ends up ski…

I thought there were scandals involving him getting naked in a hot tub with a bunch of women while he was married to Demi Moore?

The US is so wild. The numbers you guys throw around make so little sense to me. My boyfriend is a junior doctor and he earns about $45k per year, which is double my engineering salary and we're pretty comfortable for a couple in our 20s (rent for a 2-bedroom flat is a small fraction of our joint income, we both have paid-off cars, no debt, etc.)

If they were high school sweethearts and didn't want to break up, their options were either marrying in early 20s or waiting until 25. FDS doesn't support marrying in early 20s, so surely waiting for 25+ is the next best thing in a case where you don't want to end the relationship? I agree that the man was being selfish, I'm just pointing at that we need to consider that we can't have mutually exclusive blanket statements. We don't want women marrying before 25 but we also don't want relationshi…

South Africa: (note that these are generalisations, obviously) Black men (majority): Many men are (absent) fathers by the age of 25, there's a "baby momma" who they are no longer with (I've heard that less than 50% of South Africans even have a man on their birth certificate, let alone a present father). The richer they are the more likely they are to cheat. If they have any kind of stable job they see a mistress as their right. Coloured men (it's a racial group, not a slur): Alcoholics, and che…

He has discussed our plans for marriage, children, homeownership, etc. a lot, especially during the last two years. He asked me a few months ago when I want to get engaged and I said (honestly) sometime in the next year or two. He literally hasn't received his first paycheck yet but he will this month, has a good job, etc. I just think he should build up an emergency fund and that kind of thing before he buys a ring, you know? Lol I've asked him about the "hoe phase" thing and he said that he ha…

Yeah, I think I agree with you. I can't imagine being comfortable marrying someone after less than 2 years. The risk of some nasty character discovery coming out at that point is still too high imo. Go through all the seasons twice. I understand the point this sub makes about forever girlfriends though, if you're dating a woman for 10 years and not committing then that's just not cool (unless neither partner "believes in marriage")

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
