That's good. I wrote the article in the link - and I live in the United States. I'd done a little research and found that though hospitals are coming around, many seem to still cling to that idea of it being a "mum's maternity ward". Were you at a larger hospital? Maybe it's just the smaller ones that still push the fathers out.

In England, they're expanding their system - but a lot of dads are asked to leave at 8pm and return at 8am. I wouldn't be able to do it; I slept in a chair next to my wife so she wouldn't be alone, and my discomfort in not laying down was small compared to hers of childbirth, so I was happy just being allowed to stay!

I'm a dad blogger and have had stuff published on The Good Men Project, which from what I've read in r/MensRights, seems to be looked at as "the enemy" (which I could be totally wrong about). So sometimes I get timid about sharing stories because of that. Yes! I saw that commercial and thought "wow, they really made a point about the guy being right." But she's also not a mom - that's a married woman, no kids implied. I have seen commercials where mom's a little crazy, but even when she's being that way (I mentioned the current whole wheat Eggo commercial below), there's always a method to her madness. It's always that she's crazy, in service to her family. Or crazy about something like fitness or eating healthy - and usually the brand is what makes her less crazy with some sort of savior product with fewer calories or faster cook time.

(TL;DR - we're looking for companies to stop the image of the dumb dad because it effects more than just the store's sales) We're advocating to really, stop commercials that advertise "to" dads by making them look like bad parents. You're right. I sold the point short by not explaining - I don't like what Amunium mentioned below - that they pigeonhole DV as something that only happens to women. But you're right - we should never deny something when it's a real problem.

Very true - they've discriminated against males, ages 9 and up! One mother even said (I think in the Birmingham Mail story) that she's got four kids and one is a 10 year old boy...so she doesn't know what to do.

I might be going to the Dad Summit, doing a panel on dad-activism. I help run 8BitDad.com - and I talk a lot about confronting brands that speak to moms as if they're the only ones running the home and purchasing home goods. When asked who else I'd like on my panel, I mentioned Ned Holstein of FathersAndFamilies.org - so I hope he and I get a chance to go speak to those 200+ dudes about really changing media for the better good of gender equality.

I'm working on a piece for 8BitDad about it. So far, from the trailers, it looks to be a laugh out loud comedy about how one man suspends all logic when a baby shows up and can't figure out how to give the baby even a basic level of care. It's a terrible image and needs to go.

Hey Rae_the_Wrackspurt - I wrote that article you linked to and just wanted to say thanks for reading and linking! When my wife first read me that e-mail, even SHE was appalled by the idea that the moms on the newsletter were being fed this idea that just because it was a man being nice, he was a predator. We came to the conclusion that it was more women being groomed to gender war than kids being groomed to kidnap. Anyway, thanks again for reading/linking!

coincidentally, I worked on that show with Glenn for some time and did a couple voiceovers for commercials. Glenn was a teacher of mine in high school, and I had been in contact with him up until roughly Mid-December...I don't yet know why he left either, but if I find out and he's okay with me posting, I'll let you guys know anything I can.

I think the outrage was more of the "big picture" - or at least it was for me. Ragu was dumb for making the video in the first place, but then dumber for not then immediately apologizing. They called the original guy who complained, tried to explain themselves to him, and then went public basically telling the internet that if we didn't get it, we were overreacting. Oh, and they mentioned that they had industry accolades to back it up.

Thanks crazyex! I'll definitely be mentioning the whole "mommy and me" class issue - because it's something that I take issue with as well. The whole marketing toward "mommy" needs to be changed stat. And whoever DOES change, I'm sure will gain market share, since fathers want to be treated like equal parents! My kid is 2 years old.
