Spot on, and it did hold him back! The only reason it "worked" in the end is because his friend gave her the number. If this was some rando in a bar that he didn't have a mutual connection with, he would have walked away and never heard from her again.

Depends both on the psychology of the obstacle and their tactics. If the obstacle is simply unaware they are being a cockblock, that is one thing.
