This is written as if you assume corsets are inherently oppressive. They are very comfortable when properly made and fitted. Bras are much cheaper to make with a far lower skill level of maker required, and more suitable for the much more free-flowing fashions of the 20s and 30s, so corsets fell out of favor. But the idea that women were regularly tightlacing is completely false except a narrow margin of upper class society ladies.

Interestingly, every single one of those things I've heard far more from men than from women. That said, I personally don't think it's gendered, it's just something people in general tend to do, and observation that tends to be biased. I tend to agree with /u/fiftypoundpuppy that it's the bizarre gendering that is the problem here. It isn't so much the observation of the behavior that I think is wrong - since I've no doubt you have encountered it countless times, as have I - just the attributing…

Yeah. I'm a woman who was a computer science major -> software engineer. I never faced any institutional discrimination, and my university had quite a few excellent female CS professors. But a lot of female programmers who were perfectly fine with the material were deeply discouraged by the overall atmosphere of the field being largely filled with obnoxious and insufferable men (a lot of them autistic with very bad sense of social norms and appropriate behavior - not in a sexual harassment sense…

That is true, but I will say that outside of freelancing there is little to no opportunity for part time roles in the way that other fields that tend to have more women in them explicitly support. For example high levels of nursing it's very easy to work only 24 hours a week and still make over $100k a year in the right specialties. Pharmacists also have good support for only part time work. Teaching is the classic with months off every year (though obviously fulltime during the semester), which…

Yeah. I think the whole 'third spaces' thing has become some sort of cope for the fact they just can't be bothered to put any effort in. They have this weird idea of these mythic third spaces that everyone used to have where they showed up and made friends effortlessly. The reality is, most third spaces are sort of no big deal and people go to them with friends they already have. You know I was going to say that what they want is for everything to be handed to them on a silver platter and have a…

I’m also confused about the third spaces stuff. I’ve seen so many people talk about third spaces “being taken away from us” but then every single example they cite are businesses going under because nobody wants to go to them anymore. Trust me, your local mall would dearly love a massive infusion of customers and activity. Spoiler alert, it’s not going to happen because people don’t want them anymore. Besides malls and arcades, all the same third spaces that have been there in the past are still…

Yeah. When people in this sub describe an “average guy” they are describing someone in like the bottom 5% of the population but seem unaware of it and seem to think that’s actually a 50th percentile dude. At least based on my experiences in my real life, even the nerds I know (I’m a woman computer science major now SWE, so my social circle is heavily leaning neurodivergent nerds) are all married or in long term relationships without anywhere near the angst or drama this sub pretends is normal.

I mean pop singers don’t generally write their own songs, at least not alone, and it’s a commercial product simply designed to chart/sell. I wouldn’t take pop songs as a reflection of the singer’s actual experiences and views at all.

That's kinda wild. The only pro-life people I've personally conversed with are at least genuine about it. For example my cousin's wife is fully anti-abortion and completely went no-contact with her sister for getting IVF with discarded embryos. For her it was genuinely distressing being informed her sister had willfully and knowingly murdered babies and she treated her just like anyone would an actual convicted/confessed murderer in their family. I'm personally pro-choice but at least she's cons…

I'm a neurotypical woman in a male-dominant career field with a much higher than average rate of neurodivergent men (software engineering). There are also a lot of neurodivergent women in the field. I've also had partners on the spectrum in the past and my husband could be (undiagnosed but with some indications). One thing that I think is a major component of this is that men who ignore/can't pick up on social cues can come across as inherently threatening in a way that women don't. It may not b…

Yeah. My attitude is: maybe someone can change those issues through therapy. But I'm not going to be the guinea pig who signs up to get abused or even murdered just to find out if it worked or not. The risk may be small but the consequences of rolling the dice and landing on an unlucky roll are literally life-threatening. That said I also find the idea of only seeking out people who are actively in therapy really weird and it's not a requirement I would put on myself. I wouldn't rule someone out…

But there are so many men that both make 6 figures and wildly exceed the bar she set. I'm married to one (and also make a bit more than him myself, before anyone goes off about that). Having a good career and being kind, respectful, and contributing to the household labor is not an unreasonable standard to meet at all.

Yeah, this is exactly what I don't get about this weird redpill "hypergamy" nonsense ideas. You can so very easily disprove it by just existing in real life and looking around. I have no idea how people are buying into it when any sort of vaguely normal life experience so obviously disproves it.

Yeah, I think you are spot on regarding the mismatch in what people want. As a woman, that is specifically a nightmare scenario. It is absolutely terrifying to endure. It is not fun and it is not good. I specifically avoid putting myself in situations where that might happen because it is scary and threatening, not delightful.

Even Jordan Petersen advocated forced monogamy. But then obviously most advocates for arranged marriages are not incels or adjacent. I'm not a Jordan Peterson fan at all, but this is usually wildly misrepresented and has nothing to do with arranged marriages. First of all, it's not forced monogamy, it's enforced monogamy, and it has nothing to do with forcing unwilling people (women) into relationships and certainly not arranged marriages. It's about banning or discouraging polygamy and encourag…

Yeah. Sometimes, maybe most of the time, incompetence isn't weaponized... people just actually are that stupid and incompetent. These people aren't sitting around strategizing how to carefully get away with something, as the term weaponized implies. They're just useless.

I'm in category 2, for me it started out as assuming there would be opportunities to be somewhat helpful and now it's less gloating about success and more sitting back and watching the hopeless trainwreck for entertainment/gawking at takes and perspectives that seem completely wild to the point it makes me go 'do these people live in a completely different reality than me?'. For example when people here post about hypergamy and how only the top 20% of men will ever have a partner, I just blink a…

I'm a mid-30s woman who doesn't want kids and I've never once in my life felt "scrutinized" or pressured about it. On Reddit or in real life in general. I've simply never once in my life felt any sort of desire for children and my relatives are working doubletime on the procreation front anyway (I have multiple cousins who are in the 4 to 8 kids ranges). That said I generally just don't feel peer pressure or societal expectations on a variety of topics the way some people seem to. Which has pros…

As a woman, why bother wasting energy critiquing something that's being offensive on purpose? Rap artists already know, the vulgarity and misogyny is part of the point for the rappers that utilize it. Aren't you just saying "congratulations, mission accomplished"? What's the point? I also don't listen to rap music at all but I do play video games and read comics and graphic novels (though not superhero DC/Marvel type comics, other genres). So I'm much more likely to actually care and purchase a …

I'm a woman in tech and the the "ulterior angle" is MONEY, just like it is for most software engineers. It's just a job. There's no required threshold of nerdiness. Thank god I did too. I'm not even 35 and cruising right to early retirement :) So yeah, I 10000% switched into CS for money and I am not the least bit sorry about it. I was originally planning to complete an undergrad in chemistry and a PhD in pharmacology with a focus on forensic toxicology, but decided after my first paid internshi…

I think doing things in real life vs. a gym also helps with that. Or maybe it's just me. I've never done a hike that long, but even on much more modest hikes there's a point where you're kinda bored and tired but your ass is still miles away from being back to the parking lot and there's nothing to do except just get it done and you don't feel anything. That's a point where if you can just turn off a treadmill and go do something else... well I'd certainly be tempted to. But on a real world hike…

That's an interesting site, but I think the way social bubbles work kind of makes the percentages feel off. For example it says that only 0.1% of men meet my standards (doesn't have or want kids, age 30-42, height 4'0"-8'0" because I don't care about height, minimum income 90k, any ethnicity, hair color, eye color, atheist, nonsmoker, not married or obese). But with how social circles work I know dozens of dudes IRL that fit those criteria. Hilariously, if I filter it down to my actual husband's…

What a disgusting government overreach and violation of rights that would be. Genuinely I believe the implication of legislating something like this would have for civil liberties and bodily autonomy is absolutely chilling and it is stunning to me that someone would seriously suggest such a horrific violation of rights and freedoms. Not allowing adults, even well into their middle age, to choose who they are involved with? Bizarre.

I'm not interested in anyone that does shift work with unpredictable or night shifts, which most police have but also applies to a lot of other careers too (not cops specifically). Where I live there's not really any issues with cops abusing power and it's not particularly dangerous or stressful (very low crime area - literally thousands of times less crime than a large city - also the police aren't unionized and there's not really any corruption either). Actually probably the biggest risk is a …

I don't have casual sex, why would I care if someone else is having (or not having) casual sex as much as they want to? The truth is, casual sex is rarely rewarding for women like it is for men, and is drastically more dangerous for us. There is nothing at all appealing about it to me. Some women enjoy it and that's good for them, but I don't, and I don't care at all that random dudes struggle to find those women who are down for it. Every average to below average looking dude I know that actual…

Without the next stage of the abuse cycle or in other manipulative contexts, it's not lovebombing. It only exists as an inherently manipulative tactic. The term originated to describe cult recruitment techniques and expanded to describe the lovebombing stage of abuse cycles. Someone who is genuinely and wholeheartedly infatuated and enthusiastic and acting like it isn't being inherently manipulative. It can be annoying or "too much", but that's still different than abusive and manipulative.

'Lovebombing' only exists as a manipulative action within a cycle of abusive behavior, so it is inherently pretty awful. Just being clingy or desperate or affectionate or infatuated and showing it isn't lovebombing though.

For what it's worth - I guess part of what OP is saying - I'm in the US but I've seen basically not a single thing in real life that I've seen talked about in this sub. I'm mostly here to gawk because it's all so bizarre and entertaining tbh. Everyone I know IRL are perfectly average people that have no trouble having successful relationships.

I think you're using a far narrower definition of 'sexual advance' than most people do. The legal definition is different and much narrower than the colloquial one found in the general dictionary, where most people use it to mean any sort of flirting or approach or suggestive comment with the intent to result in a sexual relationship. For example being asked out on a date would qualify as a sexual advance for most people, even if there was no explicit mention of sex or genitals in the process.

To be honest I'm not actually sure what the numbers are on a 'percent of population' basis. But I will say that as someone who enjoys reading and writing (and indie publishing/selling) written erotica it's definitely an, uh, thriving community. Romance novels are by a huge margin the best selling genre of books by volume, though typically they are published more frequently, at a lower price point, and much faster to read than something like epic fantasy or hard sci-fi, so it's not quite an apple…

Just so you know, this wasn't really true in the way you're presenting it. Yes, it wasn't specifically illegal to discriminate against doing business with women, and that sucked. But many banks very much did appreciate women as customers, and in some categories women actually were more likely to get approved for loans than men. There were banks in the 1800s that were run by women as bank presidents, there were banks that catered and advertised specifically to women account holders and staffed lo…

Yeah, this. I don't think it's necessarily age related... While it's totally possible for someone to develop new goals later in life after previously having none, more often it seems like people who don't care early on... just never will. At 23 I was already established in my early career and had already been promoted to a mid level engineering role from my entry level job. I wouldn't call myself ambitious at all really, but at least organized. Long before that I'd had a clear plan and goals, an…

The wild thing is people will absolutely still talk about/to widows this way. My dad died in an accident that wasn't his fault when I was young and people would still spew "single mother" stuff at her (a middle aged formerly married lady). Literally cannot win in any circumstance I guess. She wasn't trying to date anyone either (she's never really tried to date again and he's been dead for nearly 25 years).

To be frank you have to be kind of dumb to be functionally a tradwife without actually being married. The only people I've known in that situation without being married were way more along the lines of dependapotamuses/hobosexuals (it goes both ways gender-wise) than tradwives and they were just jumping on the opportunity presented to them. For them they were sometimes a little worried about being dependent, but not worried enough to do something icky, boring and inconvenient like actually have …

I can only speak for myself, but the gender doesn't matter. I'd be totally fine with a bisexual man but I am not interested in a promiscuous partner. I want someone that views sex as belonging within a committed relationship and isn't into casual encounters or casual dating. The only exception would be if they viewed it as a past mistake and now feels very differently than how they once did, but it would require some significant explanations about how they've had a profound change of heart in re…

No it doesn't happen in real life, at least not that I'd ever seen or at any noticeable rate. That said, I'm coming at this from the perspective of someone married (and before that it was an "all in" relationship that we knew was a forever kind of thing). I do not date or enter relationships casually. Personally, money beyond a certain point doesn't interest me much. I'm a software engineer and so is my husband and both of us specifically chose not to pursue certain higher-paying areas of the fi…

Tbh I think there's a double standard about George Clooney's wife because she was notably less attractive than the women Leo goes after (she's obviously very pretty just not a literal model/supermodel), and her profession was substantially more "serious"/intellectual in the eyes of general society and was also successful completely separate from any industry he had any influence in. It's not exactly hard for someone to believe he'd find her genuinely interesting and intelligent. They also only h…

As a woman that message skeeved me out completely. Obviously we don't have all the context, but specifically what made me go "ew, fuck no" was the part where he says "You're way too beautiful to be wasting time on boring dates." That's just a fucking rude and insulting thing to say. He basically just outright says "actually I've been bored to death this whole time, I don't actually like you or your personality, I just want to use your body for sex instead of wasting time on all this boring talki…

Yeah. For what it's worth my very religious conservative family members (of either gender) who don't really go on the internet really do 'walk the walk'. Not sure why reddit is obsessed with supposed hypocrisy. As far as I know they actually did wait for marriage to have sex and take their responsibilities and roles as providers and 'head of household' very seriously. They are not into double standards and do hold themselves responsible for not indulging in whatever sinful stuff they're against …

I mean, I agree with you that a two parent household isn't automatically good. Some people are shitty parents and sometimes they end up with 2 shitty parents and twice the shit to deal with. But I've lived in both a single parent and two parent household. My father died suddenly when I was 8 and I can say with absolute confidence that literally every single thing about my life was worse after he died than when he was there. Not just the grief, but the overall functioning of practical household t…

I'm married but we're childfree. I'm 34 and we've been together for over 14 years. Never wanted kids in the slightest. Building a life together is fantastic. Every aspect of our lives is better together than it would be apart. Having someone you've built something lovely with (a life, a home, etc), who knows you inside and out, who has been there through thick and thin, etc. Someone you'd trust with your life. Whether or not you want children, isn't that the same goal either way? I don't see why…

Yeah I'm just seconding you on this. People say it takes "superhuman effort" yet all of the totally average normie people I know in my life somehow manage to do it? So many different possibilities - hobbies and groups related to them, volunteering, sports leagues, whatever. I also agree that there's very little change in the availability of "third spaces". All of the ones that were there in the early 90s are still there. What's changed is that a lot of lonely younger people don't want to go do t…

Yeah, I definitely had a few weird experiences being a female comp sci major in the ~2009-2013 era. Most of the guys in my classes weren't weirdos though. But every once in a while there'd be something that made me facepalm and go "only in CS...". Like one dude had a total meltdown being put in a duo group assignment with me (prof just paired people up based on last name initials, totally random) and this guy basically had like a panic attack/mental health episode so bad he had to go to the hosp…

I mean, sometimes it's the opposite of this? As a woman I intentionally avoided dating men in finance, law, medicine, etc. even if they were high income, because those tend to be very high stress, long hours professions and I'm not down for that lifestyle at all. I'm a software engineer and my entire life is built around doing as little actual work as possible. High stress careers don't gel with me at all. Well, I'm a woman and I care a whole lot about money. I'm also married to one of the stable responsible ones, so... Different people have different priorities. Over the years I definitely have known plenty of women supporting men who have a neverending, revolving door of getting a low wage jobs and then getting fired from them for being either unreliable or combative. Look at the houses the average American worker lived in in the 1950's. Yeah, this is a good point. People go on and on about how easy it was to support a family back then... but the standards of living were much lower than what most people are willing to accept now. My grandfather on my father's side did support a family of 3 kids and a wife without any particular education, but they lived in a 900sqft house in rural Appalachia. They had no indoor plumbing until my dad was 13 and no AC, the frid…
