While I tend to agree with your point, you've just missed my friend's motivation in the matter. He'd choose the lesser chance to win because he thinks it would be a greater failure to lose in a situation that you are more likely to win. He implies that it is a bigger shame to fail in that case, so it is better to choose the harder way because if you lost at least you have better excuse. But the truth is that in real life nobody cares with your excuses.

number of kisses - I think - varies not with the region but with the company. Where I live, Eastern European City, each company have their own way...just to be unique. Furthermore in some companies guys kiss guys on the cheek too.
