How about we pick people who are best at math/physics/science/..., and ignore their gender? If there are 90% men and 10% women in some particular study/work area, and you force a 50-50 quota (for eg. 100 positions), only 10 of women are amongst the top100 best candidates and all 50 men are in that group. 40 women are then outside the top100, so picking a woman at random, there's an 80% chance she's not as good as an average man in the group.... if you need something done good, who will you pick …

But if you're in a higher position at a public service (taxpayer paid), you can't hire yoir girlfriend. But still, both are insurances, either both should discriminate, or neither should. Having laws in place to make it illegal for one type and legal for the other is not ok, especially if the same gender (which is a protected group) gets the short end in both.

STEM is more straightforward than other fields of study. Either your right or wrong. And your grades will reflect that. This! If the answer is 7 (of whatever unit), the answer is 7 (of that unit). If a private company was paying someone 320k to read the news, it would be fine (the money comes from the company), but BBC is paid by the the taxpayers (well, technically by subscription, but it's hard to avoid paying, so it's like a tax). So alot of people pay for it, even if they don't watch BBC at all, and when they hear that someone out there is paid 320k of their money to read the news, it's normal to get mad.

A bit offtopic, but in some countries there is a law that states that everybody has to get a part lf the inheritance, even if the will gives the property to (eg.) just one of the kids. So if someone has two children, one of them cares for his parents and the other is never there, and the will says the first kid gets (eg.) the house, the other kid has the right to sue to get a share of the house (25% in this case), and gets it by law. Sometimes I don't understand my country, really...
