I'm going to take issue with your evaluation of the Apple / Jobs situation. With hindsight , Steve needed to be fired. Otherwise NeXT would never have formed and he would never have developed the foundation of the Apple of today. We could be stuck with BeOS... And never see Pixar come to fruition.

20-80 rule ? Tyler Perry ? I know what the Pareto Principle is. Long day. Your writing was excellent and your points made succinctly.

Then take a pair of SSDs as a local storage cache, a local long term storage utilizing RAID 10, then push an encrypted copy up to Amazon Glacier. Welcome to tiered storage with archiving, but no backup.

ZFS if you can, but commercial solutions with RAID 6 if you can't do ZFS. There is still a write hole issue with 6 or 5, but 10 has performance issues. However , RAID 1 is good on a starter set and only require 2 drives. With the size of drives pushing 6 TB + , the question is how paranoid are you ?

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
