There will certainly be gangs, but you do not have to join one, you will not need "protection". People in low and medium security are mostly people just trying to finish their sentences and get out, just like you will be. Find things that will occupy your time, like you said reading and lifting are a good start, but that alone isn't going to fill the day. It is pretty easy to avoid fighting and violence.
