In the way that one prefers a sunny day, society as a whole, our economic system, and plenty of individuals would prefer if you crawled into a hole and died — they world doesn’t think about you, but if it did it would put you in the ground without a care. We’re fodder. That’s just how it works. It’s not personal. Nobody’s giving out permission to feel emotions — the general rule is shut the fuck up. There are exceptions, of course, but only to reinforce the rule. (Notice how, when we do see an e…

Why does this thing I hate keep coming up in my feed The enshittification mechanism of social media has a clear bias toward negative engagement, rage bait, hate-watching, etc. This is a fundamental change in media literacy from the broadcast era: you really can’t take what’s on your feed and extrapolate how it represents society, because what’s on your feed is determined by an algorithm interpreting what you watch, not by an impersonal zeitgeist.

This is a very adversarial view of society. Is it serving you?

You’re invoking “empirical ethology a lot, it doesn’t seem that you understand that that explicitly deals with non-human behavior

This is precisely the flip-side of the male-as-norm problem, an issue that’s been part of the feminist platform for the better part of a century. It’s bad for everyone, gang.

This is a great specific example of a very general and wide-ranging issue. Is this related to the male-as-norm problem? The dehumanization inherent in framing androcide as genocide seems an obvious consequence of the problem of framing men as the default form of humanity, like the flipside of the same coin even.

Would you call someone an anti-racist if all they did was repost other people’s racism? What other kind of advocacy involves collecting examples of people saying dumb shit on the internet? Don’t men deserve actual organization, collaboration, legislation instead of this constant stream of pearl-clutching over how much misandry there is in the world?

Do you consider yourself to be “left wing”?

With the state of abortion legislation, and general tone of conversation here, apparently I do.

No laws that discriminate against women in the West That’s…just not true. Women were explicitly barred from serving in combat in the US until 2013. In Switzerland, women didn’t have full voting rights across the country until 1991. More broadly, the idea that there are no discriminatory laws against women is a bit of a misleading; obviously most forms discrimination don’t require a law. For example, it was legal and common practice to discriminate on the basis of sex and marital status in housin…

There’s definitely a way to talk about it that doesn’t invoke blame, and many or most people who are addressing this issue publicly are coming from a good place. But you can just look at this sub if you think that blaming women isn’t part of the conversation. That’s part of what’s great about groups like this, it forces us to come to terms with the voices that are angry, hurt, blaming, etc. There is plenty of that in this space and it’s OK that this is part of it.

No, this is exactly what I’m pushing back against. I’m saying that assigning blame in this way is counterproductive for the individual and the movement. There’s always someone saying “yes, but it’s at least little bit their fault,” and, while I see where you’re coming from, I’m suggesting that the entire rubric of who needs to do better is not it. It doesn’t work or help, and it requires you to build a mental model of the world (“most women don’t care about men”) that’s not accurate or useful bu…

“The problem is not that women don’t care enough about men” She’s not wrong. Framing men’s health in terms of “women need to do better” misses the mark on a couple levels.

Eh. I guess drop your friend if you don’t like how they act? I’m not a fan of purity testing my peers (what you call “inspecting your circle”). I’ve never gone wrong trusting my instincts to tell me who to spend time with.

This sub is weird. There’s a vague sense of decency downthread, and staunch antifeminism at the top, but not any leftism anywhere. Failing that, niceness is a pretty good hill to die on.

I fail to see the problem here. You’re free to disagree with the sentiment or question the author’s motives, but I’m very leery of whatever underlying ethos makes you feel that this banal encouragement demands we as men must draft a counterpoint. This letter asserts no facts and demands no action — why would it need a response at all?

I had a group of LGBT friends Ok… that I just met Hmm I had to cut them off for making me feel like trash because of my penis hmmm I don’t actually know much about them or whether they were LGBT or ace or anything. That would be weird. There’s a lot more to the story but I won’t get into it. Am I the only person wondering what the fuck this sub is even about?

I did not, I'm just learning what that is now. If you think the entire field of mental health is poisoned against men, can you share what kind of alternatives you think men should use?

hoo there’s a lot to unpack here. Double standards are a thing across the political spectrum — OP indicates one or two in this very post. Does leftism inherently promote a double standard for men and women? I think the answer is a clear “no,” given the fundamental principles of equality, and secondary efforts of breaking barriers of gender essentialism, etc. I’m not clear why having a bad interaction with a self-identified “feminist” would lead someone to believe leftism is inherently discrimina…

I guess I fundamentally don’t understand why women are part of this conversation at all. This disingenuous feminist mob you invoke sounds like a strawman to me — it’s the internet; nobody has to look hard to find examples of people saying ridiculous shit about men or women or anybody in between. Even if it’s not tho, how are we in the position where that’s an impediment to your psychological health? We’re listing all the classic reasons people avoid therapy, but recasting it as a feminist conspi…

Who said “man up”? I’m sorry my response wasn’t helpful to you OP. Maybe I misunderstood but it seems like you’re saying men shouldn’t open up in therapy because the baseline culture is misandrist. That’s self-defeating. “Talking to a therapist is unlikely to fix anything” is an unhelpful place a lot of us have been and a lot of us still are.

I’m old enough to remember when MRA was about parity in family custody cases, educational opportunities, and safe working conditions. This culture war bs has us so twisted up that men unironically think therapy is a feminist plot, and who benefits from that? Maybe therapy is unlikely to fix anything, but treating your own emotional development like a venomous snake guaranteed won’t.

Dozens of countries have mandatory military service, which serves as a defacto requirement for citizenship. Heinlein’s scheme was a hyper-libertarian pastiche, a reference to tiered citizenship in the Ancient world — not super relevant here.

Interesting to note that women in voluntary military service is negatively correlated with conscription — the countries that don’t do a draft have, by far, the most women soldiers. It’s certainly sexist but from a traditional/statist perspective, being on the draft is considered a societal privilege, akin to (and often affecting) full citizenship.

WhY aRe MeN sO ViOLeNT?! Stand up for women by hitting a professional comedian who referred to your wife, a huge celebrity sitting in the front row at the Oscars. This is the worst possible take. For starters, 90% of the time I've seen a man physically "stand up" for a woman, he's being an aggressive egomanical asshole -- it's not about her at ALL. The other 10% of the time, the woman is using him to act out her own toxic, violent personality without repercussions. Don't be a fucking chump -- re…

How many false allegations are not reported? I...that's...wow.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates13/08/21 04:32 AM

Yes. From the wikipedia summary, the studies surveyed supported a rate of 2% to 10% false accusations. I read over these studies a couple years ago, I didn't find a single one that wasn't in some way objectionable (YMMV obviously), so I would contend that even the lowest estimate (2%) is too high. Putting this into context that only ~30% of rapes are even reported and you've got a negligible number -- 3% would be the highest rate the numbers I'm using could possibly support. For the reasons stat…

Obviously there's a wikipedia page on this. Looking a little deeper at the source studies, though, there is an appalling lack of rigor. Several studies use the best guess of someone reading the case after the fact as a standard for "false accusation." Fully two-thirds of all sexual assaults are never reported to the police -- in the face of serious and deliberate bias in the studies sourced by wiki, it's clear this is an extremely rare occurrence -- at least compared to its prevalence in the dis…

Male friends, sports, I have no idea what else Nora Ephron is a great writer with a lot more insight into human nature than she's allowing this character to have. The larger point here is you really don't want to be taking relationship advice from meetcute 90s romcom screenplays (yes, I know it came out in 1989), because they are designed to be enjoyable fluff with all the complexity and nuance of a Hallmark greeting card.
