It depends on the site you're designing. If it's a consumer facing site, marketing is usually one of the goals. You might be developing a web application though. And I'm a full stack web developer, so I do the web servers, the database, the client side, the whole #!. My first job, though, I was working on an internal company site to display sales data, customer account data, etc. for display on kiosks stationed throughout the company.
Well, what do you consider entry level? My first job was a web consultant, and I made $70/h. Not the top job, but definitely not the bottom of the totem pole either.
