It's not necessarily a reflection on your date, but I am guilty of having used this when I don't want to commit five hours to someone I don't know very well. I wouldn't push her on this weekend. I have never found myself in a situation where I thought, "I trust you wholeheartedly because of this choice in drink". It seems like it'd be difficult in practice to ensure someone was drinking something hot without appearing controlling.
