Hi All,

My wife and I may get a divorce for religious reasons & i'm wondering what she is likely to be awarded if it goes to court. Some bullet points to consider bellow.

  • We are in the UK.
  • We got married young.
  • We have been married for 7 years.
  • We have no children.
  • I make £104,000 yearly pre tax. This figure raises by around £15,000 / year & I have no reason to think it will stop doing so.
  • She has no income.
  • She has been a student for our entire marriage, recently completing her PHD.
  • I have supported her financially for the entire marriage.
  • I pay all our bills, both joint (mortgage, utilities, etc) & personal (mobile phones, cars, etc).
  • We have 2 cars, we drive one each.
  • I give her £500 monthly to spend on whatever she needs / wants.
  • When we are together I pay for everything (meals, outings, holidays, trips).
  • She has never contributed to our finances in any sense, not 1 penny.
  • We have 1 house, which is in my name only, it is our home, it has around £30,000 of equity in it. We bought it around 5 years into the marriage.
  • We have separate bank accounts (she hates this, she thinks it's controlling of me).
  • I have around £300,000 in savings which she doesn't have a clue about.
  • I have a company of which I am a director, my shares probably total around £650,000 in value. I started the company 2 years into the marriage.

She has stated that she would want 50% of everything if we divorced, which seems unfair because she hasn't made any contributions at all towards getting where we are. Her opinion is that she is a supportive wife, and that that support has assisted in getting us to where we are. My opinion is that because I am a workaholic, I would have achieved more financial success if I had not married her, as every ounce of my time would have been spent furthering my career.

Any advice on what to do or what to expect would be very much appreciated, even different opinions & judgements on the situation will be helpful.
