Once the conversation has been started and I get the sense the guy actually wants to talk to me, it’s easy

So we've established that the problem is not that you don't know how to talk. There are lots of possibilities here. Is this guy actually just shy and awkward? Or just not interested? Or really boring? Or really dumb?

I'm a great conversationalist if a man is operating somewhere in the ballpark of a sentient human being, but I can't pull blood from a stone. You can be the most interesting girl in the world, but there are lot of men out there who will respond to the most open-ended, intellectually provocative texts with "cool," "kk," "yeah," or "haha." That's not a you problem, that's a them problem. Same deal with in-person communications. If they don't counter your questions with a reasonably open-ended responses that invite further discussion, it's really not your job to try to make them socially capable. In a lot of instances, you probably can't.

Try this approach: 1. Ask a question. Then, in the same text, 2. Share your answer to that question.

There are various articles online about questions to ask your date.

Example text: Hey, I was wondering why you never had kids? For me, I just wasn’t with the right guy.

Share what your hobbies are or a show you like and find a common interest. Once you find a hot topic that he likes, just ask alot of questions about it and keep him talking
