How far do you wanna advance in your career / how fast?

If you make a portfolio, learn Javascript, CSS, Angular 2, React, etc you can make 30k to 40k or so easy. No college needed.

If you wanna move from that to full stack learning ruby on rails is a good. It will be more difficult to find a job with no college degree but if doable

Anything more advanced then this a college degree will become a huge advantage.

Real money is on the backend. But if you want to do website building, and work on a team where that's all you do, there's plenty of front end work out there, but website skinners are a dime a dozen unfortunately.

The portfolio idea and self-teaching works. You may have to work some lower paying jobs to build a resume, but it's not the worse thing on Earth.

The benefit of self-learning is that you can see the latest and greatest and what's going on in the industry, whereas some formal education will be in the stone ages or whatever the instructor is familiar in.

Also, no one gives a shit about an associate degree in web development. Resumes and going through recruiters is far more lucrative.

A huge component isn't just making pretty pages, but knowing how to hook it into something on the back end. That's what people hire for, not just pictures and thing.

I would recommend FreeCodeCamp for the basics of HTML and CSS. Their courses on JavaScript are also great.

Also, Udemy is your best friend.

Try and make a web app, any kind. If you're struggling to get an idea, you can find existing projects and try to modify them according to your needs. GitHub is great for that.

If you have further questions, feel free to DM. I'm a recent CS graduate also on a job hunt. The degree is good to have, but most things I know I learned by myself anyway. Just keep on working.

20 years in the web dev field here. Best advice would be to build some template websites using Google material design principles, then apply for front-end UI jobs. If they hire you, it'll be because of likeability more than experience (since you don't have much), and you'll be able to gain experience (and pay the bills) while working with a team that may inspire you to reach new limits with your abilities. If you enjoy the work, keep pushing forward, learn JavaScript, a server-side language like C# or Java, database engineering & SQL and you'll eventually become a full-stack engineer. I believe in you :)

It's not like youtube is full of answers... Having had to say that, maybe you shouldn't pursue any field related even remotely to computers and knowing how to find answers on a specific topic online - it just might be too cryptic for you.

As someone who is currently in college for CS degree, run and don't turn back. You can learn it all online and can join a few Discords for programming with active communities so you can network and ask for help, go to hackerspaces and meetups.

Focus on javascript, Angular and typescript. i mean it depends exactly what you want to be. A "Web Developer" usually is working on front end, i.e - HTML, CSS, and JS. JS is probably the most important aspect here. I would definitely learn Angular 5, and jQuery. NodeJs is also a good thing to become familiar with. Personally i've worked in all areas of the stack, from front end to backend, but i'm a backend developer. I would say a college degree is not bad but you have to look at exactly what degree you get at the end. Some of these colleges present scam degrees and the actual content you learned in the class is not worth the price of entry. Make sure you pick your program wisely. Myself i did my degree in electrical engineering but became passionate about java development after landing my internship.

You'll need some JavaScript library knowledge for user interface stuff. I recommend jQuery (which is fairly universal), Knockout, React, Angular, and TypeScript. It wouldn't hurt to study plain old JavaScript - the basics are in there.
