Actually, it's the number of the beast, not necessarily the devil. You get 666 or 616 (depending on the spelling) by adding up the numerical values of the letters of the Roman: Neron Caesar. (In the case of 616 it's Nero Caesar). The Roman emperor at that time was the enemy of the early followers of Christ, as they were persecuted for their faith. By using the number the early Christians could safely speak about their enemy without raising suspicion.
