I watched this video on asset protection. He mostly talks about protecting your assets for when you die, but when he mentioned irrevocable trusts I got interested in how that would be handled in case of a divorce. I googled this question and found out that irrevocable trusts won’t be divided in the case of a divorce. However this doesn’t mean much because you would lose control of the assets, and who would want to do that unless it’s just to spite your exwife. This ended up leading me to find out about domestic asset protection trusts which as far as I can tell are just irrevocable trusts with you as the sole beneficiary. So that in a divorce, the assets can’t be divided but afterwards you will receive your assets. Any thoughts? Has anyone here done this or had success with anything similar?
