Bad date story. I won't talk it up like it's a crazy story because it's not. In fact it's pretty mild compared to what I see on here. But I always enjoy reading when someone posts one, so I thought I'd share one of my own.

I had a date back in November of 2017. It was with some chick from Tinder or one of those other terrible dating apps. We were having trouble picking a time because she had a very busy schedule. I worked a standard 9-5 job, so I offered to meet her during my lunch break. We agreed to meet up for coffee, but I told her I only had an hour because it was my lunch break.

This girl was running late and couldn't be bothered to text me. I waited 15 minutes then said "fuck it" and ordered a water and a muffin because I didn't feel like paying for an overpriced sandwich at some place I had never been to before. I had literally just finished eating and walked out the door when I ran into her outside the front door. I strongly considered ignoring her and to keep walking, but she seemed so genuinely excited to see me and gave me a hug, that I backpedaled and agreed to stay. (I now think she was excited for free food)

We went back inside together and I was pretty salty because she was over 30 minutes late at this point. I walk with her up to the front to buy her a coffee, since this was the first meet up and we agreed to a coffee date. She then orders a $12 meal and a $5 coffee. I wasn't having any of that and went to go sit down. Didn't even wait for the cashier to bring the total up. Not only did she not respect my time (especially since I was running out during work to see her during a time that worked with her schedule), but she didn't respect the unspoken rules of a "coffee date". We make small talk, but it was very clear that it wasn't going to work.

We ended up texting sometime the next day and she said she was mad that she had to pay for her meal, and that she was raised with the expectation that the man pays for the date. I then educated her that a coffee date is exactly that. I would have paid for a drink, and even a snack. The arguing went back and forth a bit more then we ended it there. It was clear that she was entitled, and definitely not pretty enough to get away with it.

I spoke with some co-workers, both male and female, and everyone agreed with what I did. They all seemed to understand the general expectation of what is acceptable to order on a coffee date.

I know it's not a huge "life shattering" story about divorce, alimony, or child payments.... but it's these little moments that clued me in to the big secret that women really aren't worth the trouble. I'm almost 30 and I have no kids and never married. I just finished college and got an awesome job that pays three times more than I have ever made before now. My freedom is perhaps my greatest treasure, and it's something I protect fiercely. It is not something I will give up so easily.
