It's still good to check in on your friends from time to time, especially in times like this. But never feel guilty about spending more time with yourself than anyone else, if you're time alone isn't fulfilling it's your fault

Basically saying men with strong minds are always changing to the point where they won't like the same people they used to like being around, nor hold the same political stances, nor the same philosophical views

Put simply, the man he is describing isn’t the ‘barbecue and ballgames’ type and will eventually develop self-reliance and heightened sense of awareness through wisdom to the extent that he will become someone like Rust Cohle from True Detective. That’s how I read it anyway.
