Being UnOffendable

By GuidoBandito's Co-worker

Growing up, my dad always said this quote to me, "Living well is the best revenge." I've said that at least 1000 times to my wife, kids, friends and co-workers. Living it out over the course of my life, however, has been a real challenge. This is something I constantly tell myself and often wish I had done better.

I try to always remind myself:

  • Offenses are "taken" — The oldest origins of the word "offended" means "snared." I choose to 'take' offenses and put myself in that snare or trap; I have complete control over how I respond to a situation or comment. Even when someone is extremely rude or trying to hurt me, I can completely disarm them by choosing to remain unaffected or replying with kindness. I can be unoffendable.
  • I am here to solve problems, not create them — Nothing is worse than troubleshooting/fixing an issue and egos or feelings get in the way. When I've felt my hackles rise because someone talks over me or says something counterproductive; I can't create more problems by introducing my feelings; I have to put solving the problem above all else.... I can be unoffendable.
  • Before I judge someone, I should walk a mile in their shoes — Since I rarely get the chance to truly understand people and their motives, this old idiom says to me that I should never assume what someone else's day/week/month/year has looked like. We've all been frustrated and overworked, but stack on top of that personal or health issues, and there's a recipe for someone being offensive. I can choose to be a light in their day — I can be unoffendable.

Some of the most unprofessional moments in my career were because I became offended and lashed out. We're not all born saints and I've "taken" many opportunities to be offended in the past.

It's something I work on all the time; please join me... be unoffendable.
