I was standing in line at the bank and the person in front of me was a father with her daughter. I am not sure what the amount was or what they were even talking about, but when I hopped in line, the daughter exclaimed to her father 'that's all you make?'. The father says 'that's all I make... and it all goes to you guys.. all of it'. The daughter had a shocked look on her face, as if she expected that her father was some kind of grand superhero that made 500k a year or something.

The father's tone was just kinda like... 'yep.. that's life'.

I am not sure what the 'it all goes to you guys' exactly meant. Maybe it meant child support, or maybe they were still together and he was just supporting everyone on his own. Hell, maybe I am a huge jerk for even assuming that and it turns out that his wife is sick, and he is doing his best on his small salary to support them all. Who knows. If that's the case, I sincerely apologize to whoever you are for thinking otherwise. Probably not the case though.

Anyway, what I wanted to point out is that... considering the daughter's reaction, this is a clear representation of how society trains people to perceive fathers as these grand superhumans. You can't fully respect your father until you realize he is just a human being. I am not saying that fathers have the right to be shitty (my father was amazing, even though he made some very 'human' mistakes in life), but the expectations just have to be reasonable.

I like kids and this isn't a bash against the daughter or anything, but her expression just seemed so pretentious... and I dunno.. almost like a 'wtf' kind of expression. It's not her fault she thought her father was a millionaire. It's this god damn expectation of fatherhood.

Whoever you are, I apologize for eavesdropping on your conversation, but I hope one day you can find a way to spend some hard earned cash on yourself and enjoy life a bit more.
