I work as an editor on several publications that tend to attract mostly female readers, and 95% of the contributing writers are women.
I hire them via a freelancing site. It's not that I'm choosing women, it's that the topics we cover tend to appeal more to women and there are hardly ever any males that apply.
Their writing is usually all over the place - emotional and unstructured. Some require a lot of work to become intelligible. They also tend to struggle with the technical aspects of using the freelancing site and the CMS - both of which are very popular and probably the most easy-to-use ones available anywhere.
I have writers submit their own photos, and few of them understand the concept of hi-res versus low-res, or how to deal with files.
Since the same issues keep recurring with different writers, over time, I've built up a library of templates for correspondence and also put together a guidelines document with detailed instructions. In all correspondence, I'm constantly walking on eggshells and am super careful to take the blame for any and all problems that arise during the process.
The freelance sites allow buyers to post feedback. There is a private feedback rating that only the site admins can see. Then, there is public feedback. For the private feedback, I burn them to the ground, but for the public ones, I always give five stars - otherwise, it would be making an enemy for life. By giving them five stars, I am making them into a fan of the publication and encouraging them to brag about it.
