The impact of this is going to be fucking enormous. That number has to be almost every record they had on file. That they admitted it this early on tells you that they can't hide it. They're fucked.

143 million includes all working people and some still living retirees. We have maybe 110 million workers in the country. Think about that. Crazy shit.

That number is so large that your stolen ID could be floating from buyer to buyer for years. They won't use them all right away. It will take years maybe even decades to abuse all those stolen creds.

Guaranteed everybody here working is affected by it as Equifax is a credit bureau that keeps records they get from all w2 offering companies in the US. Definitely stolen SSN, maybe drivers IDs and other assorted goodies.

And now they're asking for the last 6 digits of your SSN (out of 9, which means the search space is reduced to 1000 options at most, but fewer in practice) + full name to check if your data was compromised. Top kek

Somebody stole some checks out of my mailbox and tried to wash them and cash them at a nearby casino about 13 years ago, ever since then I have been keeping a close eye on my credit reports.

It looks like Equifax is providing free identity theft protection and credit monitoring in the wake of this event, so if you didn't have it before, now would be a good time to look into it.
