Indeed.
Just had a moderate sized little landscaping & concrete patio project done.
Every. Single. Part. Of. The. Project. From the surveyors, to the people who marked the underground telephone, electric & gas lines, to the guys that the did the machine operating & ground re-shaping, the truckers who brought the gravel in, the crew that set the forms, even the people who poured, stuck off and finished the concrete... not to mention the shrub planting, final topsoil, and even the grass seeding work. ALL MEN.
Not a woman in sight, anywhere!
Which of course was (to me) a beautiful thing for several reasons: 1) ZERO arguments or problems; 2) minimal costs (no time or energy wasted bitching & moaning); and of course... 3) everything was COMPETENTLY done.
-- Now the thing is, while a FEW of those tasks (striking off the concrete, lifting-balancing-placing & pulling the floats, etc) require a bit of strength, NONE of the rest of those jobs would be physically "impossible" for a woman to do; in fact for some/many of those tasks (the final "finishing" of the concrete for example), being a shorter, smaller, lighter-weight person is actually an ADVANTAGE (and so the guys that go out on the concrete to finish the "center" parts are usually the short & skinny dudes, not the Paul Bunyan types).
EDIT: In fact sometimes you need/want REALLY "little" guys -- I'd bet the kid "jumped" at the chance to help -- can you imagine some "princess" agreeing to do that? LOL!
-- And it is not than men purposefully "exclude" women from them -- it is that women AVOID those jobs like "the plague."
-- Why? Well first of all, because property lines don't give a shit how you "feel" about them, if the corner "iron pipe" is buried 12" deep or stuck in some swampy mucky underbrush and you need to DIG or clear underbrush out of the way to confirm it's location... then you need to fucking DIG & CLEAR the brush to find it; PMS or no PMS, whether your boyfriend stood you up last night or not, etc. The same with all of the other PHYSICAL materials and machinery etc -- your "emotions" are IRRELEVANT -- you're either COMPETENT, or you're NOT, you either LEARN how to do the job properly or you're out of work: you can't just "flirt" your way to success.
And then of course the work is OUTSIDE, requires both physical AND a degree of mental effort (including doing some MATH, and doing it correctly: you'd better get the calculation on the volume/tonnage of stone pretty damned close, and the same with that concrete order, else you're gonna fuck everything up; and once that concrete truck gets there you're gonna HAVE to get in there and start shoveling... and then later, it's NOT gonna wait until you feel yourself to be "in the right mood" to float and finish it... you're either ON IT, or the entire project/job is screwed.
-- That kind of oppressive 'pressure' (literally "Concrete waits for no man!") is just too much for the vast majority of women -- I've seen a few try; they seldom last more than one job (most in fact "bail" in the middle of the first day, even before the REAL work begins); and they virtually NEVER last more than a week.
(And again, it isn't simply a matter of physical strength or endurance, because I've seen really scrawny, even 'wimpy' guys who've managed to stick it through and learn and adapt -- especially once they find out their small size gives them an ADVANTAGE in certain aspects of construction work, and that it/they can be a true BENEFIT to the team/crew as a whole, more than "earning" their pay {whereas being a 280 lbs "ox" while advantageous for certain things, is often a detriment & a problem in a host of other ways: hyper-muscled or not}).

I have always said that if a woman thinks she can do what men do. Go hang some drywall or sheet rock and get back to me.
