Studied economics & statistics, wound up a self taught software programmer now cryptographer. It will fuck up your social life but if you don't mind having a small circle of family and/or friends you'll love it!

I have done a bit of everything in IT over the last 18 years. The money is good still and its extreme if you know where to look. Get some webserver and networking knowledge and train yourself up on BIGIP F5 devices. In 2-3 years you will be earning more money than you know what to do with. Programming is great, but cloud automation/devops is where the money is right now and will be for the next decade at least.

Got my Associates in Networking ended up going to medical school instead since entry requirements were easier.

Some IT jobs were asking for 8-10 years of experience for entry level data entry.

Yes. Did freelance for 5 years brutal. Middlemen cornered the market and are all snakes demanding to make as much on you as you make if not more.

I didn't suck it up and go through college. Sometimes I regret it, but ultimately I like the way things have turned out and my course ahead. I was like you in that I would feel suffocated and stifled in any educational environment. Academia was never my bag, never liked it even when I was young. Additionally, taking on that amount of debt to go to college for me was a complete dealbreaker. Planning on learning a trade soon. Everything I heard from friends and family told me that it's a very mixed bag. Some people acclimate and have a great time, other people despise the entirety of their time there. I'm not a particularly social person and I don't like academia in the first place so I decided to pursue a trade.

Way I look at it, though, if you have the skills naturally and the aptitude for it, if you self-teach and are disciplined and you get your certs, you could be quite successful in IT without a degree. That is, if you're willing to work like a motherfucker. Seems like a great job and it's in high demand. Personally I could never quite develop the math skills for programming, but it's a great field, especially if you want to work independently. Plenty of great resources online for you to learn new things and lots of great books about it.
