Particularly the contrast:

When my wife first announced she was pregnant, there was no unbridled joy swelling inside of me but only trepidation. I put it down to nerves and figured they would pass. Over the course of 9 months, my anxiety only grew increasingly tumultuous.

When I first held my son, there was no instant connection, no immediate unconditional love. Only a gut wrenching feeling, like someone had dropped an anchor from my chest to the pits of my stomach.

Over the years, I learned to put up with it. I treated it as a job. I thought maybe I was broken. That I was incapable of feeling love. But that wasn't true, for I loved my wife. So why not my kin?

My wife is pregnant with our second child. I finally have all those little bolts of joy of parenthood, eager to raise this child. Yet, my feelings towards my son remain the same.

Certainly an "interesting" set of posts. (Presuming of course that it's not just "fiction.")

Leads you to wonder a number of things about how much genetics (and possibly other things hormonal -- pheromones, etc) in reaction to the genetics play a role in "bonding."

Also, having seen a few families where something similar was at play -- a father who seems to have a strong connection to one child, but then conversely obviously NOT "bonding" with one or more of his other kids (and even sort of revealing it via subtle "tells" in body language, as well as attention, time spent with them, etc). Guess I'd never really considered it (thought it was more some psychological "didn't want to have kid #3" kind of thing etc) as possibly genetically based...

But now that I rethink some of those families; yeah there was a notable resemblance & similarity of interests with the father & the kid (or ids) they DID bond with; and then a slightly (and in at least one case) a rather significant LACK of "resemblance" (brushed off as "takes after her side" etc) as well as difference in temperament, interests etc... make you wonder, maybe he WASN'T their biological father, and subconsciously KNEW (or at least sensed/felt) that.

A part of you can always tell. Likewise if your partner slept with someone else. Smell, psychic impression, who knows but there's something foreign and your body senses it.
