Personally I never liked it, sometimes it's a fine line between making fun and putting you down. I'd rather not even go there in the first place. Sometimes when a guy has a bad day and then his friends make fun of him he explodes lol I saw it happen a number of times. A little bit pocking is no problem, but I think compliments are better. It's been said that men rarely receive compliments.

I don't see how. With guys it's friendly banter. You don't do that with guys you don't know. Only your friends can insult you but the thing is when you need help they'll be there for you whereas a lot of girls' female friends are not hence why they keep male friends around.
