IQ was never meant to be a measure of "intelligence" anyways. The test is, and only ever was, meant to be a tools for uncovering deficiencies in various areas of logic, reasoning, and spatial capabilities.

That's why I don't get why people use it like it's a genetic proof someone is smarter. Genetics is part of it, but education is also a significant part of it.
And frankly, I think all the STEM courses teach you how to do things that the IQ test tests much better than all of worthless filler degrees.

Correlation is not causation.
Education, socioeconomic status, family life, etc. all play a huge role in determining what you mentioned as well.

High test scores (IQ, SAT, GRE, etc) are a sufficient but not necessary reason to conclude someone is smart in a certain sense. I especially think that logic sorts of tests that do not rely much upon previous knowledge accrual are particularly instructive in this way.
I've known several folks that killed those tests, and they were all very smart when you got to know them. You cannot be a retard and get a perfect score on the GRE.
However, I've known some smart people that didn't test well.
So, that is why it is sufficient but not necessary.
Most folks that think IQ means nothing either scored lower than they'd like or are ideologues.

I agree with you. I also would like to point out that this is probably the most balanced view of intelligence testing I've read in a long time.
My problem is with people who hold IQ and its heritability factor as a hard and fast rule. It isn't. There is necessarily some uncertainty. Further, IQ's correlatuon with quality of life markers is a very weak argument for my reason stated above.
IQ is a sufficient measure of how intelligent you are. Nothing more. To equate it to quality of life is fucking retarded.

It is useful for rough categorization. For instance, if someone hits the ceiling effect on it with a perfect to nearly so score, then the test was too easy to really test them. You can safely say they likely are very good at math, etc. That is the group that selective programs are looking for.
Similarly if someone does very poorly (bottom percentiles) they may have an unaddressed learning issue or just not be very smart.

As you get older, genetics play a stronger role in who you are. Women at age 20 are nothing like their mother. Women at age 40 are exactly like their mother. This is the reason politically motivated studies never compare the adult IQ of men to women or between various races.

Understandable, as long as your going for a STEM degree, it'll work out. Just remember, always try to go for an internship before you finish your degree, that level of experience can really put you ahead of the others who haven't.
