Have a set of standards, morales and virtues that you prioritize
Don't just play the game or be in the moment, but consider your actions in the greater scheme of things. Do your actions bring you closer to having access to more interactions and opportunities as well as being successful and being the simplest method for accomplishing this? If your answer is yes then you're making the right decision.
Life is hard... you will face challenges... but if you set your priorities you can decide when it is reasonable to swallow a lose if you still gain what you want.

Example... men think caving to women's demands and always saying she's right is a good thing. But this is wrong. You win momentarily, but you lose access to future engagements and lose respect over time. What this means? As she loses respect she loses attraction and sex is lost anyway. Seek to be good, but always maintain respect. Respect is more important than sex. Why? Because it's a scam. Disrespecting you allows her to win that moment, but you will lose. The ideal (if you're we're going to engage with women anyway) is to maintain respect and sexual attraction. But this applies to friendships and careers as well. If you are fair and even handed, but always maintain respect, you will go far.

What does this mean? Alpha and Beta are unhealthy ends of the extreme. You want to fall in the middle. The correct position is to be a sheathed sword a moment before it's drawn. You must not seek to expose the blade, but you must also not fear it's use. Power can be abused, but to fear or lack power also puts you in a horrible position.

But being a social species makes this difficult. You have to manage being sociable with managing your goals. But that's the point. Surround yourself with those who push you forward and want the best for you. And naturally you should do the same for them.

What am I saying? Alpha is broken and I don't admire or respect him. As for Beta? I would say the same for him as well.
