Basic rules of thumbs. Which I still apply and off all people learned from a woman..

1 Don't invest in money you need in the foreseeable future.

2 Never invest with loaned money. Only your own.

3 Spread your investments. Unless you see Warren Buffet when looking in the mirror, never place all eggs in 1 basket

4 Decide out of ratio, never emotions. Emotions are your worst enemy.

5 Have a ""psychopathic"" bond with your investments: don't be scared to take some punches. Because you will. Also is you make a sell decision, don't look back. You very rarely sell on the top.

6 Follow your own path. Listen to advice but take your own decisions

7 In dubio abstine. I.o.w. if you doubt an investment, don't do it

8 When something is looking too good to be true, it is.

9 If you can't explain a 6 year old what the investment is about, it's a scam. I.o.w. if you don't understand it, don't invest. For me that's bitcoin f.e. (not asking anyone to explain it to me, I won't invest in that anyway)

10 Again emotions: if you're scared to lose, then just don't invest. There's nothing wrong with keeping a savings account. Sleep > investments

Most people like indexes, I’m an individual stocks guy and my portfolio is only 12 companies. I buy cash flowing large cap value stocks (good dividend yield) of quality companies I like to do business with, or whose businesses I understand by reading through their publications and financial filings, then I set my dividends to reinvest. Also try not to time the market, instead make consistent and steady contributions to the same portfolio month after month after month.

Generally some sort of broad index fund is a fairly "safe" option for new comers. And of course U.S. treasures are fairly safe as the U.S. has never defaulted on them.

Two very simple examples of safeish long-term investments are:

Vanguard Lifestrategy 100% equity accumulation
Funding Circle

You can split your money something like 70% Vanguard Fund and 30% Funding Circle.

But first make sure that you have at least 3 to 6 months your monthly salary set aside into a cash savings account for rainy day/emergencies where you can get access to money instantly just in case.

Never invest money that you can't afford to lose or losing which will cause you too much distress.
