Oh don't get me wrong though. I am in no way opposed to a belief in God.

I have this thought. It's actually really severe and this comment on Reddit will never do any justice to the attention it deserves, but I'll try.

I don't cry anymore. I mean I haven't in years. Like most adult men, not much can make us cry. Shit sometimes I wish I could cry. But I've learnt to deal with shit life throws at me in other ways.

But the saddest thought I can possibly imagine is that if all of this is truly for nothing. And this thought is absolutely not about me, it's in no way at all personal or internal reflection. It is the opposite.

I would feel so fucking sad for the rest of everything. Including people who struggle to conquer situations. People who've experienced good relationships and have them cut short by a tragic death. People who've sacrificed. A certain type of person comes to my mind, the type of person who is diligent to go to work, puts on a brave face, tries to be positive in life, and yet doesn't earn much, struggles to get ahead, a bit like an innocent dog just keeps being optimistic about things. Doesn't have very many friends or family. But just tries to be positive.

And this crushes me, to think that if this is all for nothing their time spent alive was absolutely for nothing.

I adopted a rescue dog. It's still not recovered from all the bullshit it went through, it's been a full year. I'm happy to see any progress. This dog has sad eyes. It is confused. It doesn't know why it is alive.

WHY.

And so while science is in the business of eradicating the question "WHY". I embrace that question and I suggest any sane person should too.

Ultimately the idea that this is all just some random bullshittery and absolutely for nothing - Is about the most soul crushing thing I can think of.

Men are born, and they toil all their lives, and then they return to the dust from whence they came. It doesn't matter if you went on some great conquest, or invented some great machine, or if you just cleaned the piss off the queen's toilet seat, we all die and eventually all is forgotten. So it's a shame when you consider, as you said, the poor hard-working bloke who's just trying to scrape together enough cash to pay the bills this month. He's honest in his work and optimistic about life, but struggles in vain. Ultimately, he struggled for nothing, there was no net gain, there was no purpose really, other than to prolong his temporal existence.

Yet this is only true from a materialistic point of view. Assuming a divine creator is responsible for starting this cosmic anomaly we call life, then even after we pass, our legacy is not forgotten. Assuming also that this creator grants eternal life to some of his created beings, perhaps our achievements and our lives were not lived in vain.

I'm not saying you should believe in the God of the bible, or any god, or any religion, just to establish some false sense meaning and purpose in your life. I think every man needs to go on a spiritual journey at some point in his life, and consider all beliefs with an open mind until he finds the truth. Otherwise just having religion for the sake of avoiding existential dread won't really satisfy you.

If you haven't already, start listening to atheist/theist debates and such in your spare time. Follow logic and rationality, and you'll find the answers you're looking for.

No, you wouldn't. If you're as close-minded as your way of communicating implies, you likely aren't ready to accept ideas that don't fall in line with your preconceived notions of life. However, I was once like you, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and offer some resources for you to consider.

Foremost, while I don't consider wikipedia to be a reliable source in some cases, here's what it has to say about the historical Jesus:

The vast majority of scholars who write on the subject agree that Jesus existed, although scholars differ about the beliefs and teachings of Jesus as well as the accuracy of the biblical accounts, and the only two events subject to "almost universal assent" are that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist and was crucified by the order of the Roman Prefect Pontius Pilate. Historical Jesus scholars typically contend that he was a Galilean Jew living in a time of messianic and apocalyptic expectations.

In a 2011 review of the state of modern scholarship, Bart Ehrman (a secular agnostic) wrote: "He certainly existed, as virtually every competent scholar of antiquity, Christian or non-Christian, agrees" B. Ehrman, 2011 Forged : writing in the name of God ISBN 978-0-06-207863-6. page 285

Robert M. Price (an atheist who denies the existence of Jesus) agrees that this perspective runs against the views of the majority of scholars: Robert M. Price "Jesus at the Vanishing Point" in The Historical Jesus: Five Views edited by James K. Beilby & Paul Rhodes Eddy, 2009 InterVarsity, ISBN 028106329X page 61

Michael Grant (a classicist) states that "In recent years, 'no serious scholar has ventured to postulate the non historicity of Jesus' or at any rate very few, and they have not succeeded in disposing of the much stronger, indeed very abundant, evidence to the contrary." in Jesus: An Historian's Review of the Gospels by Michael Grant 2004 ISBN 1898799881 page 200

Richard A. Burridge states: "There are those who argue that Jesus is a figment of the Church’s imagination, that there never was a Jesus at all. I have to say that I do not know any respectable critical scholar who says that anymore." in Jesus Now and Then by Richard A. Burridge and Graham Gould (Apr 1, 2004) ISBN 0802809774 page 34

I can go on if you like.

You should really approach such matters without arrogance as you seem to do. If you genuinely have questions regarding Jesus Christ you want answers to, I can recommend a book written from the perspective of a skeptic: "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel.

Historical Jesus
