People are emotional creatures. Even if you know everything by the book word for word but have the temperament and attitude of a robot, people might be turned off by you and wont want to work with you day to day. Know your shit and be personal and hold conversation. Make them feel comfortable. Don’t be afraid to be nervous. It’s human nature and shows that you care.

Oh and for the love of god, don’t act like a know it all and make the person interviewing you feel intimidated at all. You’ll do fine OP.

Create an account on Glassdoor.com (it's free) and see if anyone has posted any potential interview questions.

A lot of companies like to ask anecdotal questions now ("Tell me about a time you failed," "Tell me about a time you had a disagreement with a manager," etc.) so have some stories to tell about how you turned bad situations around and resolved conflicts.

"Tell me about yourself" is the open ended question used to see what you will say. Mention your family if you like, your hobbies, passions, interests, tell them anything interesting about yourself, if you don't have anything, make something up.

Be prepared for STAR questions. Those are the most popular questions asked by all HR reps these days. These are behavioral questions such as “give an example of a time when you worked with somebody difficult” followed by “How did you resolve it?” and “What were the results?”

If you can get fairly good at answering these questions you will usually always impress the HR rep and make it to the second interview - usually a more technical interview in my case. What helps me in answering these questions is to look up the most popular behavioral questions that could be asked online, and then coming up with a small list of projects I’ve worked on that I can draw multiple examples from. When you can give real world examples and then relay that into how what you learned from the experience will help you in this new role, you can quickly impress the interviewer.

I've done a few interviews in the IT field.

The first thing I noticed was that a lot of the same questions got asked at several interviews. What I started doing was writing down all the questions after the interview was over. I'd take time to really flesh out the answers after the fact (when you're on the spot, you forget a whole lot). Before my next interview, I'd read over these questions as a refresher. Sure enough, I'd hit the next interview and come out of it with 3-4 new questions and a repeat of several questions I got before.

Your 'question file' or book if you still use a pen would gradually grow and grow, and the interviews would start getting easier and easier.

Here's an example. Any tech support job I ever got an interview for would always ask almost word for word "You get a ticket/call from a user stating that the user can't print. What do you do?"

Seems like a simple question, but when you've heard it 4+ times in a row, you get real creative with your answers. "Well the first thing I would ask that user is 'Can anyone else print to that printer?' just to establish if it's just them or if it's an outage for everyone. blah blah blah.

With networking jobs, there was always at least one subnetting question (we have a /28 network and are currently using up 11 IP addresses. We want to add a new printer to our network. Can we?)

Stuff like that.

Write down all the questions right after you leave the interview. Dump that shit from your brain to paper the moment you get out of that interview. You may not get the first 3-5 jobs, but you'll be acing those interviews after you realize that 8 out of 10 questions were identical to the last interview you took.

That's my advice. Currently making over $80k CDN per year (so like $127.50 USD :) )

'Tell me about yourself' is a stock intro question. Give them a one minute bio, brief, bullet points, while also smiling and being upbeat.

Have answers (that make you look good) to stock questions such as:

- what are your strengths?

- what is your greatest weakness?

- where do you see yourself in five years?

- tell us how have you proven your commitment to diversity (I failed that one big time).

Possible risky question, but a little aggressive . . The previous occupant of the job, why did they leave? Then watch their faces, not their words.

From the interviewer's perspectives, they'll interview a dozen candidates and after a while they all look alike. How to stand out in a good way? Show you can do the job, have a track record of getting stuff done, overcoming obstacles.

Get them to talk about themselves and they'll like you better.

How to stand out in a bad way? Candidates who changed jobs every 6 to 12 months. A man wearing eyeliner.
