The ones who earn those degrees go on to become incredibly skilled in bike-shedding. It's essentially what they learn.
Which I think stems from how they are taught the absolute most surface level details of whatever it is they are studying, and are passed through the classes if they can memorize/parrot the material. The methodology and responsibility for diving deeper into said material now falls solely on the student, and there is no repercussion for not doing so. It is not part of the required coursework.
You read a chapter about the different kinds of vehicles. You learn there are cars, trucks, and SUVs. You take a test in which you choose a multiple choice question that states there are cars, trucks, and SUVs. At the end of the week, it is noted that for further study, you are encouraged to read X, Y, and Z publication on the various makes and models, different trim packages, technical service manuals... Once you've read these publications, you can conduct independent research as to which of these models are better than the others and for what reasons.
You can even come speak to your professor who will assist you in this independent research, and give you resources to help you. Should you choose to do so, you might even have your research published.
But should you choose NOT to do any of this further study: no problem! It's not required! Just choose "C.) cars, trucks, and SUVs" on the test and you'll get an "A" on your final grade. And then you'll get your degree!
So when nobody has any reason to conduct study past the very fucking surface level of any material, none of them are competent in anything. They might know some technical buzzwords. They know a little bit of jargon, and have some vague idea of concepts that exist within their field of study.
And then they go onto the workplace with their degree, where everyone expects that they should know all of the makes, models, and years of every vehicle, as well as how to tear down and rebuild the motors, service the transmission, and program the fuel injection control module. But they don't. They only know there are cars, trucks, and SUVs.
So when a large project gets handed down to them and it's OBVIOUS they're in over their head.... they begin bike shedding like a motherfucker to cover their ass.
They'll focus on some obscure problem that needs to be blown out of proportion. Suddenly they need to make a huge deal about how they want to head up a committee and form policy and procedure about the correct safety procedures for installing and removing toner cartridges in the laser printer -because damnit, apparently everyone who's been here for 20 years is doing it wrong and it's just fucking unsafe!
Bow down to them for being an industry innovator and creating three-ring binders full of power-point and excel sheets pinpointing just exactly why pulling a toner cartridge out a certain way is far more important than the project senior leadership just handed down for redesigning data send/receive protocols of all current airbag deployment modules in order to be complaint with newly mandated highway safety commission standards.
Yea, us salty old guys? We're onto you, snowflakes. We see the full on mental breakdown you're barely staving off. We can smell the pure anxiety emanating from you. I don't have a problem with people who honestly get in over their heads, and then admit they need to learn the real world. I'll help people like that, and will lead them into a prosperous career until they can take the training wheels off and go on and do great things on their own. The ones that come in full of hubris and start doing that other bullshit, though? You might as well be dumping a bucket of chum in shark infested waters -we're probably just going to let you fail, and won't even tell you that you're fucking up.

Where does one gain a true education, though? There used to exist institutions with integrity in the US that were more than paper mills where you pay them tens of thousands of dollars, and they give you a participation trophy.
Have you interacted with any recent college graduate? They're not educated. They're indoctrinated.
I was recently having a conversation with one of the "better" ones, whom I respect as being among the more intelligent and more put together. He certainly has more work ethic and passion than his peers. The subject came up of the socratic method. He didn't know what it was.
He studied a niche major that shouldn't have been subjected to SJW nonsense, but would likely have included classical studies.
I later determined that even his niche major was still full of propaganda and indoctrination towards accepting a political agenda, which he was very much bought into. I guess that's what happens when the pipeline is high school directly into college with no life experience in the middle.
So the question remains -where does one gain a true education now? Where do they learn critical thinking skills?
The colleges and universities claim that's what they offer, but the reality is they are often failing to produce those results. If you can be bothered to show up to class, turn in an assignment, and parrot the correct/approved talking points, you'll pass with flying colors. No critical thinking or intelligence required. Crippling debt is a feature, not a side effect.
I went through that system a little later in life than most, so I had already experienced the world and was wise to the shenanigans. I figured out that in order to get my piece of paper at the end (which is required more and more to go anywhere in most of our institutions), that I simply had to keep my mouth shut and repeat whatever garbage they wanted me to repeat.
I still knew what I was "learning" was mostly bullshit. I picked up what valuable knowledge I needed in the very technically oriented classes, but even those were full of indoctrination and agenda pushing to an extent. At the end, do I feel as though I got an "education" or "culture"? No, not really. I had already learned as much in my field by working in my field than I did in college. I had an opportunity to do some research, which was cool I guess. I then took said research right back to work with me. So maybe that helped a little.
I got some textbooks for reference material. Although I could have simply bought them on Amazon. I did get a piece of paper, which the only way you can get it, is by going through the motions. I do not, however, feel that my wallhanger changed anything whatsoever as to my professional ability.
Luckily my tuition was paid for by my employer and grants, so I don't have to worry so much about the debt. Had I been someone who had to take loans for these shenanigans, I'd probably be very pissed off right about now.
It's seeming more and more like all of the colleges, regardless of how prestigious.. whichever region you're in, at least from the experiences I've personally encountered... are falling into this. From my personal time there, to the ones I've spoken with who attended different schools.
Granted, some of them come out with some decent technical knowledge -but they aren't truly being educated. I certainly do not feel that I got an education.
